Preparatory Works of the Armenian Round of the 2008 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition Started
This year the Armenian Young Lawyers Association will again organize the Armenian Round of the 2008 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, which is aimed at raising the level of professional knowledge of the young lawyers of new generation. The AYLA has already started the preparatory activities for organization of this event.
The preparatory activities started with a two-day seminar which was held on 4-5 August in Tsakhkadzor.
The seminar was aimed at familiarizing the Armenian law students with the Competition, as well as with the official rules on the one hand, and on the other hand to introduce the experience of the participants of passed competitions, to inspire the students with the ideas of this competition, which joins the students from nearly all countries of the world.
Law students from 18 institutes, as well as members of the teams and judges, which participated in the international rounds of the former competition and members of the Jessup Club of Armenia attended the seminar.
The facilitators introduced the Jessup history, the order, procedures and the principles for the organization of the competition. The participants of the passed competitions noted the importance and the role which the competition had in the process of their formation as layers. At the same time they introduced the experience which they gained from their participation in the Competition to the students, which were doing first steps. The y also introduced the details, which were necessary for compiling the written memorials, as well as the methods used during the oral rounds.
The Jessup judges gave advices which were of great help for the beginners as well. The judges first of all referred to the competition rules, and the requirements to the written and oral rounds, and pointed the most important details which should be considered primarily and the ways to meet these requirements.
Mr. Thomas D.Mittnacht, Public Affairs Officer of the US Embassy in Armenia, who attended the seminar as well. He greeted the participants and attached much importance to the organization of the Jessup Competition in Armenia. He noted the importance of participation in the competition first, and emphasized it as a good opportunity to form skillful lawyers who will contribute to the establishment of the legal state and democratic society. He also mentioned that the US Embassy supports the organization of the Competition because they believe it will provide opportunity to the participants to be trained as knowing and skillful lawyers and gain experience in the international law as well.
In addition to the information referring to the competition the participants gained opportunity to communicate and to spend the weekend in a free and friendly atmosphere.
