Suggestions

I can honestly say that working in Armenia with AYLA was not only eye-opening but also one of those experiences that will stay with me for the rest of my life and will no doubt have an impact on my vocational choices in the future. The translation work I completed helped me to improve my Armenian reading, writing and vocabulary substantially, which was one of my main goals when I decided to come to Armenia. I wanted to return to England with a greater grasp and understanding of my language so that I could perhaps use it in a professional context one day. It was always great to be able to compare the consultation styles in Armenia with those that I have had experience of in England. However, if there was one main suggestion that I would make to future interns, it would be to come to Armenia with a set plan of exactly what you want to do, see and experience, don’t just come here without some sort of strategy and expect to be given a lot of work. You need to be very motivated; otherwise you could find yourself having not done much. The people at AYLA are very friendly, laid back and will try to accommodate you as much as possible as long as you emphasize what it is you have a specific interest in doing.

I would also recommend doing translation work for some of the time. As this will not only broaden your general vocabulary and reading and writing, but it will also improve or acquaint you with Armenian Legal Vocabulary. This was of particular interest to me as I have aspirations of doing legal work related to Armenia in the future and knowing Legal Armenian would be crucial.

I would whole-heartedly recommend my experience to other young diasporan law students. The benefits are on so many levels, that everyone could potentially get something very different out of the experience.
