INTERNSHIP

Internship - Summer 2005

Armand Sarvarian
Was born on 23 May 1984. He is currently a student of law at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

I began my two-month internship with AYLA 1 July 2005 in conjunction with the Birthright Armenia program. I learned of AYLA through the online website and by reputation knew it to be one of the main legal NGO’s doing real work towards solving people’s everyday legal problems, as well as improving the Armenian legal system by battling corruption and unprofessionalism. This was the main motivation for me to do my internship with AYLA. This experience has been very informative and enlightening and I would not hesitate to recommend it to any other aspiring lawyer.

I am a law student in the UK at the University of London. My goal is to qualify as a barrister in England specializing in public international and human rights law, and eventually to repatriate in order to requalify as an advocate in Armenia, working to further the same goals as AYLA in promoting rule of law and accountability. I believe the repatriation of Diaspora Armenians would be a great help to the development of Armenia, as well as providing the Diaspora with a homeland and strengthening their sense of identity, which is constantly under threat of assimilation in other countries. I also believe that our generation has a unique opportunity to build the first viable Armenian state for over 400 years, and that this historical chance must be seized by everyone working well in their particular fields.

I have wide interests and hobbies, especially Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling and playing classical flute music. I greatly enjoy reading and debating history and politics as well. I love learning languages and am fluent in English and moderately fluent in Eastern Armenian, Persian, and Spanish.
